What the Bible Says About How to Deal With Enemies

3–5 minutes

Life isn’t always easy, and sometimes we face people who misunderstand us, hurt us, or even work against us. Enemies don’t always come in the form of strangers — sometimes they can be people close to us, people we once trusted, or people who simply cannot stand to see us grow. These experiences can leave us feeling betrayed, discouraged, or even questioning our worth. But the Bible gives us wisdom on how to handle these situations with strength, grace, and faith.

Why do people dislike you? Often, it has nothing to do with you at all. Many times, it’s because you carry God within you — and that light can irritate those who are still living in shadows. Your authenticity, faith, and joy may stir something inside of them that they haven’t yet faced within themselves.

How Someone Becomes an Enemy

An enemy isn’t always someone waving a sword at you. Sometimes it’s the friend who betrays your trust, the family member who constantly criticizes or manipulates you, or the colleague who spreads lies behind your back. These are people who, instead of celebrating your light, try to dim it.

The truth is, not everyone who starts with you is meant to finish the journey with you. When someone repeatedly disrespects your values, drains your energy, or wounds your spirit, they step into the role of an enemy—even if they once claimed to care about you.

Setting Boundaries: Self-Protection, Not Cruelty

The Bible calls us to love and forgive, but it does not call us to remain in toxic cycles. Setting boundaries is not cruelty—it’s self-protection. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us:

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Guarding your heart sometimes means stepping away. It means cutting ties when someone no longer serves your growth, peace, or purpose. Walking away doesn’t mean you hate them—it means you choose to protect your spirit and honor the life God has entrusted to you.

✨ Remember: walking alone with peace is far better than walking with people who secretly wish for your downfall.

1. Love Your Enemies

Jesus makes it clear in Matthew 5:44:

“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

When you radiate light, shadows will push back. People may gossip, criticize, or reject you not because of who you are, but because of what your light reveals in them. Jesus reminds us to love them anyway and to pray for their healing. Love disarms darkness.

2. Do Not Seek Revenge

In Romans 12:19, we’re reminded:

“Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

It’s tempting to respond to hurt with hurt. But seeking revenge only pulls us back into the shadows we’ve worked so hard to rise above. God sees all, and His justice will prevail in His timing. Protect your spirit, and let Him be the one who fights for you.

3. Overcome Evil with Good

The Bible doesn’t just tell us what not to do — it calls us to take action. Romans 12:21 says:

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Your light shines brightest when you choose goodness in the face of negativity. Every act of kindness, every moment of forgiveness, and every step you take in integrity pushes back against the shadows. Your response is your testimony.

4. Trust God to Be Your Defender

Psalm 37:6 promises us:

“He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.”

When others try to manipulate your story, spread lies, or work against you, remember that truth always outshines deception. Just as light naturally pushes away darkness, God will bring your truth to the surface. You don’t have to prove yourself to those who live in shadows — God Himself will make your righteousness clear.

A Closing Prayer for Your Enemies

🙏 Heavenly Father,
I lift up those who have wronged me, spoken against me, or wished me harm. I pray that You heal whatever is broken within them that causes them to act with anger, jealousy, or hate. Replace their bitterness with peace, their fear with faith, and their cruelty with compassion.

Help me release resentment and walk in forgiveness, knowing that vengeance belongs to You alone. Guard my heart, Lord, so that I may not mirror the darkness of others, but instead continue to shine with Your light.

Bless my enemies with clarity, growth, and transformation, so that one day they may find the joy, love, and healing they truly need. Amen. ✨
